A successful vertical berry farm built by Wasted shipping Container!
In Taiwan , the semitropical island, the strawberry growing season is summer & fall, and it always is harvested in winter. Now, the strawberry can be harvested and hot sell in summer too. The one created this Miracle is the berry farmer –Mr. Chang Shou-An. He recycled the waste Container and renew it. The berry was planted vertical in these shipping containers, in order to produce out the high quality organic berry.
“5000 strawberry can grow into a 40’ shipping container in vertical” Mr. Chang said, “ the production capacity is 50 times more than the traditional farming on Land.” Strawberry is high value crops, but also because of the delicate strawberries cultivated process is very susceptible to pests and weather. The knowhow is the use of containers to create a perfect growth environment for strawberries, including the air, water, temperature, the angle of light and to avoid interference weather and pests. So, Strawberries
can be harvested throughout the year. Less bugs & pests issue, you don’t need to use the any chemical drug to kill the bugs. It is easy to meet the Organic requirement.
The electronic equipment’s used here are very simple, such as air condition, T5 tube lighting (the saving light). The electricity cost is estimated US$500 per month. That is cheaper a lot, comparing with hiring a worker. Using recycled shipping container, it is not only saving the huge investment, but also help to reduce the garbage and friendly to our environments.
The farm can be so beautiful like Barbie house. The most interesting is “ It can grow different kind of plants, and harvest throughout the year.” With such vertical design, it needs only two labor hours to maintain a shipping container for 5000 strawberry per day. It means that one worker can take care of 20000 plants per day. The owner can have more time to promote their product on internet.
